Education funding

Education loan vs scholarship: plan your study funding

An education loan is borrowing that you repay under the lender’s terms. A scholarship or grant is an award with its own eligibility and conditions, and usually does not require repayment when those conditions are met. Start with confirmed awards and available family funds, then work out the remaining cost and when each payment is due.

What is the difference?

Funding routeWhat it meansWhat to check
Education loanBorrowed money, with repayment and interest set by the lender.Eligible expenses, approval conditions, interest, fees, security, release dates and repayment.
ScholarshipAn award that may cover part of the fees or a wider set of costs. Selection and continuation conditions apply.Exact amount, covered expenses, renewal conditions, payment timing and any return obligation.
Grant or bursarySupport for specified students, purposes or circumstances. The label alone does not define the conditions.Eligibility, permitted use, evidence, payment schedule and the circumstances that could require repayment.
Own or family fundsMoney available for the study plan without taking a new education loan. How much is available, when it can be used and how much the family needs to retain for other commitments.

Scholarships vary from partial fee support to broader funding. The British Council funding guide explains the range of UK awards and links to their providers. Use the award’s own terms for the amount and eligibility that apply to you.

Can you combine a scholarship and an education loan?

It may be possible, subject to both sets of terms. Tell the lender about every confirmed award and ask how it changes eligible borrowing, the required contribution and release of funds. Tell the award provider about other support when its terms require this.

For example, SBI Global Ed Vantage says scholarship or assistantship can be included in the margin and asks for the award letter where applicable. This is one lender’s published product rule, not a rule for every loan.

A scholarship application is not confirmed funding. A sanctioned loan may still have conditions before money is released. Keep these stages separate, particularly when a university deposit is due.

Work out the remaining funding

Enter the full planned study period, using rupees for every amount. Convert overseas quotes using your chosen exchange rate before entering them. Use zero where a cost or funding source does not apply.

Include only awards confirmed in writing. Do not count the same money twice.

The figures stay on this page and are not saved or sent. The result is a planning gap, not a loan recommendation, credit decision or visa funding assessment. Check award restrictions and payment dates separately. Do not include the same fee discount in both reduced tuition and confirmed awards.

Match each payment to money that will be available by that date. An award paid after enrolment may not cover an earlier deposit. If a funding decision is pending, ask the university about its options before assuming a payment can wait.

Use our loan offer comparison worksheet for the borrowing discussion and our document checklist to prepare the lender application. For a UK course, the UK budget planner separates costs in pounds and your chosen exchange rate.

Questions families ask

Should I wait for a scholarship before discussing a loan?

You can research both in parallel. Keep award applications separate from confirmed awards, and ask the lender what evidence and timing it needs. Avoid committing to a payment on the assumption that either application will succeed.

Does a scholarship always cover the full cost?

No. An award may cover only part of tuition or specified expenses. Read the amount, eligible costs and renewal conditions in the award terms.

Is the funding gap the amount I should borrow?

No. It is an arithmetic estimate based on your entries. Eligible expenses, repayment affordability, other funding, lender conditions and changes in your plans still need review.

Can a scholarship affect the loan amount?

Yes, it may change the cost still to be funded or the contribution recognised by the lender. Share the award letter and obtain the lender’s revised calculation.
